Journey Through the Charming, Elegant, Spooky Secret Island of Jekyll
While on a road trip from Miami to Memphis, we approached a sign saying Jekyll Island. My mom had read about it and was intrigued. We decided to follow the directions to Jekyll. We googled it and began reading about the history of this enchanting and mysterious island.
It is host to an old “millionaire’s club” clubhouse as well as the first apartment building built in the USA. It used to serve as a millionaire’s summer vacationing hub. It also is where the federal reserve was formed.
There is a quaint little church on the grounds. Just on the other side of the multi-billion dollar bridge to the island, is what looks like a deep south ghost town which was relevant during the civil war. When the Second World War began, the island was evacuated.
We had a beautiful lunch at the clubhouse which now operates as a tourist destination for retirees , history buffs and croquet lovers. After lunch we stopped for a meditation amongst the trees before walking around to check out the island.
If find yourself driving up the coast of Georgia, Jekyll is well worth the pit-stop.
